I’ve actually been going for a while now, logging almost 5 years on a real estate team. What brought me to this point?
I was blessed to be part of the #1 residential team in our area, starting as the first Inside Sales Associate for the team, working up to Sales Manager, and then for the last 3 years serving as the Director of Operations. While I was there the team helped sellers and buyers close on nearly 300 homes a year. And then we opened new offices in Houston and San Antonio.
While in Inside Sales and while managing a total of 6 ISAs in the department, in 4 years we set 1,015 listing appointments (of which I personally set 410). I managed call campaigns where we dialed thousands of property owners and prospects, including one 2 week campaign where we called over 10,000 investment property owners in the Austin area, working to help them take advantage of a seller’s market. It is understandably difficult to quantify all that I learned while interviewing, hiring, and training sales staff and agents while managing operations, new hire orientation and onboarding, scripting, technology, systems, and processes. We built a powerhouse of service that keeps on going!
Back in year 3 it had become clear that we needed a commercial division. It is impossible to serve as many people as we were and not come across commercial needs and opportunities. I began working to serve their needs on a part time basis while also working as the Dir. of Ops. and within 6 months we had hired a full time commercial agent. In 2017, with one part time and one full time agent, we listed $13.35 million in commercial property and closed $2.45 million (not including commercial leases), with several of those deals still pending under contract.
The commercial side of real estate is vastly different than the residential side and in order to better focus and apply what I do best and to take advantage of the circumstances and market in which we find ourselves, it became clear that 2018 was going to provide me with the “chance” (providential, of course) of a lifetime. With what I have learned (and taught others to do), the beginning of this year found an open door to being a full time commercial agent, but that was just a glimpse of the possibilities. The obvious conclusion (and counsel) from many who know and love me was that I needed to step out on my own. It is my livelihood in taking care of my family that we are talking about, so it needed to be my business.
So here I am with a fresh start built on incredible experiences taking the first steps into self-employment. I will own this. And by God’s grace and according to His will, I expect to work hard and see some amazing results from these efforts. With the Apostle Paul, I say, “But by the grace of God I am what I am, and His grace toward me was not in vain; but I labored more abundantly than they all, yet not I, but the grace of God which was with me.” (1 Cor. 15:10).
